Guwahati: Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has begun an indefinite Satyagraha at the Assam Legislative Assembly premises, protesting the alleged delay in disbursal of relief funds to flood-affected families.

Gogoi began the protest at the Mahatma Gandhi statue inside the Assembly complex on October 2, after the government deadline for distributing the promised relief passed.

He has said the agitation will continue until the pending assistance is released.

According to Gogoi, around 30–40 per cent of affected families in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat are yet to receive the promised ₹15,000 interim assistance.

He has also claimed that flood-affected families in Sivasagar and Charaideo have not received the additional ₹10,000 special relief announced for the worst-hit areas.

Gogoi is also seeking ₹10 lakh compensation for each family that suffered major losses and has demanded further action over the flood damage.

He has alleged that repeated state government surveys have not led to a concrete resolution.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, however, said the government is conducting surveys to identify affected families and that it has already identified around 55,000 families for assistance.

He also accused Gogoi of attempting to take political credit for the relief measures.
