SJTA asks ISKCON to follow scriptural dates to observe festivals of Lord Jagannath

Puri: The Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA) has raised serious concerns over ISKCON temples abroad observing key Jagannath festivals on dates that deviate from prescribed scriptural tithis and Puri traditions.
In a statement signed by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb and Chief Administrator Arabinda Kumar Padhee, the SJTA urged all Jagannath temples worldwide to strictly follow the Shreemandira Festivals Calendar 2026–27, starting April 14.
The administration criticised ISKCON centres for conducting Ratha-Yatras on varying dates throughout the year, despite a prior decision in October 2025. It also flagged instances of Snana-Yatra being observed on dates other than Jyeshtha Poornima.

Terming these practices as violations of tradition, the SJTA said they hurt devotees’ sentiments and emphasised that major festivals must be observed on correct tithis, even when calculated locally.
The statement of SJTA also called on ISKCON headquarters in Mayapur to review its decision and align with established Puri traditions.
