5 arrested for holding chicken-and-beer party on boat in Varanasi’s ganga

New Delhi: Five youths were arrested in Varanasi after a clip of a chicken and beer party on a boat sailing on the Ganga river went viral online.
In the clip that did the rounds on social media, the group was allegedly shown drinking and feasting on non-vegetarian delicacies while travelling on the river, which is held in high religious regard by pilgrims.
The video irked social media users.
After the video was released, the police initiated an investigation after identifying those in it. The police took five men into custody in connection with the matter.

Local authorities also clarified that the move angered some people who consider the act a violation of religious sentiments, besides being in violation of other rules applicable to boats travelling on the Ganga river.
The boat pilot was also taken into custody and quizzed about the incident.
This has sparked yet another debate among people on preserving the purity of the river and regulating visitors’ conduct.
