Low pressure likely to form over BoB, Red Warning for Mayurbhanj, Watch

Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal (BoB) and adjoining West Bengal coast in the next 24 hours under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over the Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh.

The India Meteorological Department has issued red, orange and yellow warnings for several districts as heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected across Odisha over the next 2-3 days.

What to expect:

Red Warning: Mayurbhanj district is likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall on August 8 and 9.

Orange Warning: 14 districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Anugul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Subarnapur, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Gajapati and Ganjam are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain.

Yellow Warning: 15 districts including Jajpur, Kendrapada, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Nawapara, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Deogarh may see heavy rain with thunderstorm and lightning.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain at most places in the state in the next 24 hours, with heavy to very heavy rain at one or two places. Lightning, gusty winds of 30-40 kmph and thunderstorms are also likely.

Sea condition:

Wind speed along the Odisha coast is likely to be 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph. The sea will remain rough to very rough from August 7 to 8. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.

Officials said roads and low-lying areas may get waterlogged in several urban pockets due to intense rain. People have been urged to remain alert and follow IMD advisories till August 10-11, when rainfall intensity is likely to reduce.
