The Delhi government has approved the Delhi EV Policy 2026 on Monday, in order to promote roll out of more electric vehicles and to curb the rising pollution in the city. The policy will come into effect from June 1, 2026.

As per the policy, only electric two-wheelers will be registered in Delhi from April 1, 2028 that means you can no longer buy a petrol scooter or motorcycle in the capital after March 31, 2028. Moreover, the Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy has also rejected the proposal to extend incentives to strong hybrid vehicles, and has instead focused entirely on promoting fully or pure EVs. This means hybrids will not receive purchase incentives or tax benefits under the new policy.

The policy has also introduced scrapping benefits for owners replacing older polluting vehicles with EVs. Moreover, the government has also set timelines to phase out new registrations of certain petrol, diesel and CNG vehicles.

According to the Delhi government, the long-term objective is to significantly increase the share of electric vehicles in new registrations and expand charging infrastructure across the city.

Though, strong hybrid vehicles will not get any incentives, the electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and truck will get financial incentives.

Government officials have argued that the focus is on achieving zero tailpipe emissions rather than promoting transitional technologies.
