Rape-Murder Accused Killed In Encounter After Snatching Gun in North 24 Parganas

Kolkata: A man accused in the alleged rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district was killed in a police encounter on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday after he allegedly snatched a service revolver from a police officer and opened fire during a crime scene reconstruction.

The accused has been identified as Prahlad Das. He had been taken to the crime spot at Gaighata for reconstruction of the incident after his arrest in the case.

He allegedly snatched the firearm of an escorting policeman and fired at police personnel. The officers retaliated in self-defence, leaving him seriously injured.

Das was taken to Chandpara Rural Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

The police have not issued an official statement on the alleged encounter so far.

The incident comes days after the Class 11 student was found dead near the bathroom of a neighbour’s house in Gaighata. Her family has alleged that she was raped and murdered. Das,the accused was arrested on Sunday in connection with the case.
