Heavy rainfall warning: Red alert issued for 8 districts of Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The regional Meteorological centre in Bhubaneswar has issued a red warning for heavy rainfall for eight districts of Odisha on Sunday.

The state has received wide-range rainfall in different areas after a well-marked low pressure area has deepened into a depression over the Bay of Bengal. It is moving in a west-northwesterly direction. Its epicentre is about 50 km south-southeast of Balasore and about 60 km north-east of Chandbali.

This low pressure is likely to cross the Odisha coast in the next 24 hours. It will mainly enter the land between Chandbali and Digha near Balasore.

Due to this depression, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in coastal and interior Odisha. The wind speed will increase and the sea will be rough.

Red alert has been issued for 8 districts for heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours. Red warning has been issued for Sambalpur, Bargarh, Balangir, Nuapada, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur and Kandhamal districts. Likewise, orange alert has been issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi and Koraput districts. Similarly, yellow warning has been issued for 9 districts.

Several areas in urban cities have witnessed water logging due to heavy rain. Moreover, the roads and agricultural land have also been submerged. Therefore, people have been advised to be alert. 11 districts have received heavy rain. 6 districts have received deficient rain.

Odisha has recorded above-normal rainfall during the ongoing monsoon season. According to sources, 11 districts received heavy rain and six others suffered from deficient rain.

In the last 24 hours, the highest rainfall of 276 mm has been recorded in Khajuripada of Kandhamal district have received highest rainfall of 276 mm and 264 mm of rainfall has been recorded in Tureikela, Balangir.
