Back in 2020, Donald Trump refused to admit defeat at the hands of President Joe Biden and convinced his followers to do the same. There were extreme efforts to overturn the election results, conspiracy theories being spread at rapid rates and failed lawsuits that all led to the “Stop the Steal” protests.

Those protests quickly morphed into Trump supporters violently storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The Wall Street Journal tracked a secret network of both GOP donors and conservative billionaires that have financed the current effort.

This conclusion was drawn after an analysis of Federal Election Commission filings, tax filings and other pertinent records. It was discovered that more than $140 million was given to almost 50 loosely affiliated groups that work on “election integrity.”

These groups have intensely examined voter registrations and are working to slow down the vote count, which could cause disarray at the polls.

According to The Oklahoman, some of the donors backing these groups include Hobby Lobby founder David Green. In a statement to publication, Hobby Lobby explained that foundation leadership decide how funds are spent.

The Oklahoman also reported that Wisconsin shipping billionaires Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein have given a total $34 million since 2020 to election integrity groups and conservative judicial activist Leonard Leo has given $4.7 million with the nonprofits he operates.

Other entities like the Bradley Impact Fund, Donors Trust and the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation have given nearly $48 million to the groups, per The Guardian.

Following the first “Stop the Steal” protests, more than 1,033 of the rioters were been arrested with 485 federal defendants receiving sentences.
