Athens Sees Mass August Exodus as 129,000 Set to Sail From Ports This Weekend

Greece's major August holiday exodus is underway, with heavy traffic building at the exits of the Athens basin as buses and ferries depart at full capacity, authorities said.

Traffic has already reached critical levels in several spots as many commuters choose to travel immediately after finishing work.

Congestion is heaviest on the Athens-Corinth highway between Megara and Kineta, according to real-time traffic monitoring.

Port traffic has surged sharply, with high occupancy also reported on regional bus routes. According to Coast Guard data, 147 ferry departures are scheduled from Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio over the Friday-to-Sunday period, with an estimated 129,000 passengers expected to travel.

Coast Guard estimates put Friday's passenger volume at 39,553, followed by 44,720 on Saturday and 44,928 on Sunday.

Authorities are urging travelers to arrive at ports well ahead of departure times, particularly during peak hours, to ensure smooth boarding amid the seasonal surge in holiday traffic.
