Trump not committing to attending son's wedding: "not good timing for me"
by Rob Beschizza · Boing BoingPresident Trump will "try" to attend his son Donald Jr.'s wedding to socialite Bettina Anderson, but the timing is "not good" for him. Responding to a reporter at the White House, he pointed out that the Iran war "and other things" are already on the schedule.
"He'd like me to go, but it's going to be just a small little private affair, and I'm going to try and make it," Trump said. "You know, this is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things. That's one I can't win on. If I do attend, I get killed. If I don't attend, I get killed. By the fake news, of course, I'm talking about. He's got a very, a person who I've known for a long time, and hopefully they're going to have a great marriage."
Here's footage of the question and the answer.
The wedding is scheduled this weekend in the Bahamas. It's not Donald Jr.'s first; he has five children with model Vanessa Haydon, from whom he was divorced in 2018 after 13 years of marriage.
Some analysis of the rambling, noncommittal answer is offered by The Atlantic's Jonathan Chait, but it really comes down to the first thing he said: "He'd like me to go." Everything else is elaborating the otherwise unsaid "but I don't want to."
