Students of Government Lower Primary School at Anandapuram near TC Palya were in for a pleasant surprise when they returned to school after Dasara vacation as they saw their newly beautified school with a fresh coat of paint and images of great personalities and maps of state and country, etc painted on their school building walls.

“I am very happy to see my school get a makeover. It is not that our school building was in bad shape, but the new drawings and paintings would help us a lot,’’ said Shivani M, a Grade 5 student. Gowramma N, from class 5, said the maps of Karnataka and India drawn by the volunteers are not only attractive but also educative. “The drawings on the walls motivate us. I want to thank the volunteers who are responsible for the makeover of our school,’’ she added.

SR Nagesh, Headmaster of the Government Lower Primary School, expressed his gratitude towards the volunteers who painted the pictures of great personalities and maps of Karnataka State and the country on the school building. “The makeover was done during Dasara vacation. Children were very happy to see the school building painted when they came back to school. There is no shortage of drinking water and other amenities,’’ said the headmaster.

Praveen Shukla, who spearheaded the makeover programme, said this beautification was a part of the Makeover of Sarkari School initiative. “The makeover of the school building was initiated by Being Social—Ek Nayi Shuruaat, a non-government organisation that aims to revitalise government schools. Volunteers dedicate time and skills to paint school walls with vibrant themes celebrating heritage, culture, nature, and science.

This endeavour aims to foster equal opportunities and a joyful environment for every child’s growth,’’ he said, adding that around 1,000 government schools across Karnataka, including 25 government schools in Bengaluru, have been beautified till date.

Amrutha Sharma, one of the volunteers, said, “I participated in two school makeover programs—one at Siddapura and another one at Anandapura. I have been working as a volunteer for quite some time. I consider the makeover of government school buildings as a noble cause.’’
