Former SMC Commissioner Mohd Aslam Laigroo passes away

Srinagar, Jan 02: Former Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner, Mohd Aslam Laigroo, passed away early today at a hospital in New Delhi following a cardiac arrest.

Family sources told Greater Kashmir that Mr. Laigroo, who has also served as Vice Chairman of the Srinagar Development Authority (SDA), Managing Director of the State Financial Corporation, and Director Estates, breathed his last at Manipal Hospital in the Dwarka area of the national capital.

A distinguished bureaucrat, Mr. Laigroo served Jammu and Kashmir in various key administrative capacities with dedication, integrity, and professionalism, earning widespread respect across administrative circles.

An accomplished mountaineer and sportsman, Mr. Laigroo was part of a historic joint Kashmir–American expedition in 1971 that successfully summited Katsal (Tulian) Peak in Pahalgam. For his exceptional mountaineering skills, he was fondly known as the “Mountain Goat.” He was also a renowned skier and brought international laurels to the region by winning a medal in France.

His mortal remains will be brought from New Delhi later this afternoon. Nimaz-e-Janazah will be offered after Magrib prayers at his residence, Baghi Haider, Lane No. 1, Hyderpora Bypass. He will be laid to rest at the Goripora graveyard near Jamia Masjid.

Mr. Laigroo’s demise is a profound loss to the administrative fraternity and the sporting community of Jammu and Kashmir.
