Srinagar-Jammu NH open
by M M Parvaiz · Greater KashmirRamban, Apr 5: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open for two-way traffic on Sunday despite inclement weather conditions persisting for the third consecutive day.
Officials said intermittent rainfall across the region over the past three days triggered rockfalls and minor landslides at several vulnerable locations, particularly along the Nashri-Ramban-Banihal stretch, posing challenges to smooth traffic movement.
Earlier in the day, following a brief improvement in weather conditions, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) pressed men and machinery into service to clear accumulated debris.
Restoration work was simultaneously carried out on the Jammu-bound tube at Shalgadi in Banihal and along the Srinagar-bound (up) tube between Karool and Chanderkote.
Both tubes were subsequently reopened for traffic.
However, a fresh spell of rain in the afternoon once again led to shooting stones between Karool and Chanderkote, forcing authorities to divert traffic through the down tube in the affected stretch as a precautionary measure.
Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored, with emergency response teams and equipment stationed at critical points to tackle any untoward incidents.
Commuters have been advised to remain cautious while travelling, as the risk of sudden landslides and falling debris persists due to unstable weather conditions.
Although traffic is plying in both directions, vehicular movement has slowed down at several locations.
The highway, considered the lifeline of Jammu and Kashmir, is prone to disruptions during adverse weather.
Officials said that the traffic situation may change depending on further weather developments.
Meanwhile, traffic authorities advised commuters and Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) operators to avoid travelling during night hours, especially along the Ramban-Banihal sector, due to the heightened risk of landslides and shooting stones.
The Meteorological Department has forecast continued inclement weather over the coming days.
Authorities urged travellers to check the latest road status with Traffic Control Units in Jammu, Srinagar, and Ramban before undertaking their journey.
Meanwhile, traffic authorities issued a fresh advisory for Monday saying that subject to fair weather and good road conditions, LMVs and heavy vehicles would be allowed to ply on either side of the highway.
