Museveni urges west Lango religious leaders to support govt initiatives

Kwania, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Religious leaders in the Diocese of West Lango have been encouraged to focus on prosperity and the implementation of government programs to improve the welfare of their followers, instead of solely emphasizing religious teachings. This message was delivered by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni during a thanksgiving event marking the 10th anniversary of the Diocese of West Lango.

The event, which attracted over 3,000 attendees, was held at the diocesan headquarters in Aduku Town Council, Kwania District, under the theme “Ministry of the Church in Crisis.” In his message, read by Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Acheng Ocero, President Museveni emphasized the importance of religious leaders guiding believers towards achieving better living standards, in addition to catering to their spiritual needs.

President Museveni cited Matthew 5:5-16, urging clergy to lead by example as they are regarded as “the light of the world.” He emphasized that exemplary conduct is key to inspiring community transformation.

Rt. Rev. Julius Caesar Nina Otim, the Bishop of the Diocese of West Lango, shared that the diocese is working to reduce crime through evangelism, nurturing youth, and improving the livelihoods of the Christian community.

Benson Walter Dila Oyuku, Chairman Laity of the Diocese, highlighted the diocese’s growth over the past decade. He noted the increase from four archdeaconries to 22, 40 parishes to 93, and 602 sub-parishes to 746. The diocese has also launched various projects, including beekeeping, Hass avocado farming, and a cattle farm in Kungu village, Apac District, which now boasts over 150 cattle.

Most Rev. Stephen Kazima Mugalu, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, encouraged Christians to actively support income-generating activities within the diocese to strengthen their communities and contribute to the growth of God’s kingdom.

The Diocese of West Lango, covering the districts of Apac, Kwania, Kole, and Oyam, became operational in 2014 after separating from the Lango Diocese. Rt. Rev. Alfred Acur Okodi was installed as its first bishop, followed by Rt. Rev. Julius Caesar Nina Otim, who currently leads the diocese.
