NBI summons Senate security chief, 3 others over Dela Rosa evasion
by Ian Laqui · philstarMANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation has issued subpoenas to suspended Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Mao Aplasca and three others over the May 14 escape of Sen. Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa from the Senate.
In an interview with reporters on Monday, June 1, NBI Director Melvin Matibag said the bureau subpoenaed Aplasca, Pasay City police chief Joselito de Sesto, Jean Robles, the chief of staff of Sen. Robin Padilla, and Virgilio Cariño, Padilla's uncle.
They are expected to appear before the NBI this week.
Aplasca is a Philippine Military Academy batchmate of Dela Rosa. He was placed under preventive suspension by the Office of the Ombudsman over the May 13 shooting incident at the Senate.
Dela Rosa, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, left the Senate premises the day after the shooting incident. He was reportedly accompanied by Padilla.
Dela Rosa is wanted by the ICC for alleged crimes against humanity over killings linked to the Duterte administration's drug war.
More subpoenas possible. Matibag said the NBI is also considering issuing a subpoena to Dela Rosa's wife, Nancy Dela Rosa, in connection with the Senate shooting incident.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, meanwhile, recommended obstruction of justice charges against Padilla for allegedly helping Dela Rosa leave the Senate.
