MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has extended the week-long observance recognizing the anniversary of the Supreme Court to one month, citing the need to enhance public awareness of the vital role played by the judiciary.

The extension was made through Proclamation 1265, which declared the month of June of every year as the “Judiciary Month.”

The issuance, signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto by the authority of Marcos last May 21, amended Proclamation 47, which declared June 4 to 11 of every year as “Judiciary Week” in 2001.

“There is a need to further strengthen public awareness and appreciation of the judiciary as a pillar of democratic governance by providing a longer period for the conduct of programs and activities that promote judicial integrity, independence, accountability and efficiency,” Proclamation 1265 read.

“Extending the observance to the entire month of June will allow the judiciary greater flexibility in organizing activities that will enable wider participation from stakeholders while ensuring that the celebration remains anchored on the founding anniversary of the Supreme Court.”

The President directed all national government agencies and instrumentalities and encouraged local governments, non-government organizations and the private sector to actively participate and render the necessary support and assistance to implement the proclamation effectively.

The Supreme Court is the progeny of the tribunal established by Act No. 136 of the Philippine Commission on June 11, 1901, according to the high court’s website.
