In SONA, Marcos calls for stronger protection of children after Tacloban shooting

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday, July 27, extended his condolences to the families of the victims of the recent school shooting in Tacloban City, calling on all sectors of society to help protect children from violence and harmful influences.

In his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA), Marcos addressed the families of Chris Lorenz Fabian, Joyancee Separa and Ayessa Nicole Dazo, who were killed in the shooting at San Jose National High School.

He told the victims' parents that the nation is "proud of the bravery and heroic virtue they instilled in their children."

"They are an inspiration to us all," Marcos said.

The president also extended his condolences to the families of all students who have been killed or injured in incidents of school violence.

Marcos said protecting the youth is a shared responsibility of the government, families, schools, churches, industries and communities, adding that public schools are being prepared to serve as a second home for students.

"We must all assume a community responsibility for our young people's protection," he said.

He also called for stronger efforts to shield children from harmful influences, including fake news, unrestricted exposure to pornography, the normalization of violence and the toxic culture of hate on social media.

According to Marcos, these contribute to growing mental health concerns among the youth, as well as rising cases of teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. — with a report from Cristina Chi
