Ben Sasse says he is on ‘extended time’ as he speaks on future of America amid cancer battle

Former US senator Ben Sasse has spoken about his cancer diagnosis, family and the future of American politics in an emotional interview with 60 Minutes.

Sasse, who was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic pancreatic cancer in December, said he is living on “extended time” after being given only a few months to live.

He credited “providence, prayer and a miracle drug” for extending his life, following participation in a clinical trial that has reduced his tumours by 76 per cent.

In the interview with journalist Scott Pelley, Sasse reflected on his personal journey as well as broader concerns about the United States.

“Neither of these parties really have very big or good ideas about 2030 or 2050. The Congress is not wrestling with bigger important questions right now”, he said.

Sasse, a Republican who represented Nebraska, has remained active in public discussions despite his illness.
