Severe weather hits NYC with flood risk and damaging winds forecast

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of New York City as dangerous storms move across the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning remains in effect until 7:30 PM on Wednesday for Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island, along with Nassau, Hudson and Union counties.

Forecasters said the storms are moving east at around 30 mph and could produce wind gusts of up to 60 mph as well as penny-sized hail.

The National Weather Service warned residents to seek shelter immediately and move to “an interior room on the lowest floor of a building until the storm passes.”

Officials also cautioned that torrential rainfall linked to the storms may cause flooding on roads and low-lying areas across the city and surrounding counties .

The severe weather alert comes as parts of the northeastern United States continue to face unstable weather conditions this week, with forecasters monitoring the risk of flash flooding and transport disruption.

Drivers have been urged to use caution during the evening commute as visibility and road conditions could quickly deteriorate.

Emergency officials advised residents to stay updated through local weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
