Trump heads to Michigan after Obama rallies Democrats: What to know
by By Ruqia Shahid · The News InternationalOn Sunday, US President Donald Trump will rally Republicans in eastern Michigan-a day after former President Barack Obama campaigned for Democrats in the state highlighting its importance ahead of next week’s midterm elections.
Michigan has one of the nation’s most fiercely contested US Senate seats, a vacant seat race between former Republican Representative Mike Rogers and Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed that will be a crucial determinant in a legislative race.
Even after frequently criticizing El-Sayed from Washington and at national events across the country, the Republican president had not yet campaigned in Michigan this year.
Trump has sought to show El-Syed as a Muslim extremist and repeatedly ridiculed his middle name, Mohamed, a common Muslim name.
In response, El-Syed has dismissed the accusation in a recent advertisement, vindicated his religion, and added, “Faith is a thing there is just too little of in Washington.”
Obama contextualized the attacks on El-Syed as an attempt by opponents to make him look less patriotic and less American than they are at Saturday’s rally in Detroit.
Trump’s rally in Port Huron as a section of an electorate in Michigan that handed him upwards of 66% of the vote during the 2024 presidential election is set to underscore the ongoing US-Canada tariff tensions. The trade fight has affected the Detroit-based US auto industry urging Rogers to distance himself from the president’s policy.
Democrats need a net gain of four seats in both chambers to secure a security in both the US Senate and US House of Representatives to reverse Republicans’ narrow majorities.
