Residents ordered to evacuate as wildfire spreads near Whitecourt, Alberta

An out-of-control wildfire south of Whitecourt in Canadian province of Alberta has prompted an evacuation order as emergency crews work to contain the fast-moving blaze.

Woodlands County said residents east of Range Road 114 and south of Highway 43, including the West Ridge subdivision, were ordered to leave immediately on Monday evening.

Officials advised residents to take pets, medication and important documents before heading to the evacuation reception centre at the Allan and Jean Millar Centre in Whitecourt.

According to Alberta Wildfire, the fire is estimated to cover around 55 hectares and is located roughly 3.5 kilometres south of the town.

Authorities said strong winds were pushing the wildfire south and increasing the risk of further spread.

Firefighters, helicopters and air tankers are currently working to control the blaze.

The evacuation order was issued through an Alberta Emergency Alert at 5:31 PM on Monday.

Officials warned the wildfire remains out of control and could continue to expand as weather conditions change.
