Trump makes bold claim on Iran deal: ‘Tehran won’t have a nuclear weapon’

US President Donald Trump reiterated on Tuesday that a provisional agreement with Iran makes clear that Tehran would never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon, adding that the recent framework also aims to halt operations by Iran-backed Hezbollah.

Speaking ahead of talks with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, Trump defended the 14-point memorandum of secret understanding which has yet to be made public.

Talking to reporters he said: “The only thing that really matters to me is that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon, and it says it loud and clear.”

“This deal is a wall to a nuclear weapon. His (Obama) deal was a road to a nuclear weapon. My deal, they can't have a nuclear, they get blown up,” Trump said.

US and Iranian officials are all set to initiate talks in Switzerland on Friday, to cover key issues such as the future of Iran’s enriched uranium and the lifting of sanctions.

European allies have expressed concern that an inexperienced US negotiating team could rush to secure a legally binding document leading to a prolonged standoff.

In line with diplomatic analysis, Iranian negotiators are highly proficient in nuclear diplomacy, frequently capitalizing on vulnerabilities to buy time.

Their strategy aims to make the prospect of an official agreement within a three-month window a difficult challenge.

Trump appeared crucial to Israel's strategy in Lebanon and further suggested that Syria-which under President Ahmad al-Sharaa is struggling to strengthen the country following years of civil war could be the best place to intervene, as reported by Reuters.

Furthermore, he said: “I suggested to Israel to let Syria take care of Hezbollah because to be honest, I think they do a better job of doing it.”
