US planning to strike Iran assets around Strait of Hormuz if current ceasefire collapses

US military officials are developing plans to target Iran’s capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz if the current ceasefire collapses.

According to CNN, citing sources, the proposed options focus on “dynamic targeting” of Iranian assets around the Strait of Hormuz, the southern Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

These include small fast attack boats, minelaying vessels and other assets that Tehran has used to disrupt key shipping routes.

Sources told the outlet that earlier strikes largely avoided the strait, targeting inland sites instead.

The new plans would shift focus to concentrated operations near strategic waterways. However, officials and shipping experts warned that strikes alone may not immediately reopen the route.

“Unless you can unequivocally prove that 100 percent of Iran’s military capability is destroyed or near certainty that the US can mitigate the risk with our capability, it will come down to how badly is [Trump] willing to accept the risk and start pushing ships through the strait,” one source familiar with the planning said.

Other options include targeting infrastructure such as energy facilities or individual military leaders.

A Defence Department official told CNN: “Due to operations security, we do not discuss future or hypothetical movements. The U.S. military continues to provide the President options, and all options remain on the table.”
