New Brunswick election results start coming in after polls close province-wide

Polls have closed across most of New Brunswick as vote counting gets under way in the province’s local government elections.

Election officials said most polling stations closed at 8:00 PM, although six locations remained open later due to technical issues.

Early results showed a tight mayoral race in Fredericton, where both candidates Atwin and Hicks briefly led during the initial count. As of 8:10 PM, Hicks was ahead by roughly 1,000 votes.

Results from races across the province are being published through the Elections New Brunswick website as ballots continue to be counted.

More than 1,200 candidates entered this year’s municipal elections, running for positions including mayor, council seats, rural district boards and district education councils.

The elections are expected to shape local decision-making on issues ranging from housing and infrastructure to education and community services.

Officials said live updates would continue throughout the evening as additional votes are processed and verified.

The close contest in Fredericton is emerging as one of the most closely watched races of the night as early numbers continue to shift.
