These efforts face mounting challenges as renewed Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon threaten the stability of the proposed agreement.
The trip follows the recent abrupt postponement of earlier scheduled talks between the United States and Iran. On Friday, these talks were supposed to happen. But Switzerland announced that US talks with Iranian negotiators regarding a Middle East peace pact will not occur this Friday as per scheduled plan.
Vice President JD Vance also cancelled his trip to Geneva, thereby casting doubt on the prospects for a lasting truce in the Middle East.
According to a report citing a source from a mediating nation, Araghchi has signaled that a ceasefire in Lebanon is a prerequisite for advancing diplomatic efforts.
Araghchi reportedly warned that the status of the ceasefire could be a "make-or-break" factor for ongoing US-Iran negotiations. Moreover, separate sources indicated that Iranian officials are hesitant to proceed with planned talks in Switzerland until a ceasefire is firmly established.
Currently, no new date has been announced for those negotiations.
