Calgary apartment fire sends six people to hospital

Six people have been taken to hospital after a fire tore through a housing complex in southeast Calgary on Sunday afternoon.

According to Calgary police, emergency crews responded to the blaze in the 400 block of MacLeod Trail S.E. at around 12:25 PM.

The Calgary Fire Department said the fire started in one suite before spreading damage throughout the building.

An Alberta Health Services EMS spokesperson told CBC News that one person was taken to hospital in critical condition, two were listed in serious condition, and three others suffered injuries described as stable.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.

The housing complex blaze was one of several incidents attended by Calgary firefighters on Sunday.

Crews also responded to a fire in the north-west community of Kensington, where two garages and a power pole were damaged, as well as a large blaze at the Shepard Landfill and Eco Centre in the city's south-east.

Authorities have not released further details about the condition of those injured or the extent of the damage at the housing complex.
