You Don’t Have To Pay Road Tax & Reg. Fees For EVs Bought In This Indian State

The Telangana government has introduced a 100 per cent exemption on road tax and registration fees for EVs, aiming to accelerate EV adoption across the state

The Telangana government has announced a 100 per cent exemption on road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles to encourage EV adoption. Revealed by the Minister for Transport and BC Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar with Special Chief Secretary of Transport, Vikas Raj, this week, this benefit applies to a wide range of vehicles.

They range from electric two-wheelers, four-wheelers, commercial passenger vehicles like taxis, and three-seater auto rickshaws to electric light goods carriers, tractors and buses. The initiative focuses on making electric vehicles more accessible and accelerating the transition to sustainable mobility in the state.

The government has extended a full exemption from road tax and registration fees for e-buses operated by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation and those owned by industries for transporting employees as part of non-commercial use. The exemption will initially remain valid for two years, until December 31, 2026, regardless of the number of vehicles registered during this period.

The Minister stated that the new policy aims to raise public awareness about the benefits of EVs, emphasising their role in reducing pollution levels. So far, 1.7 lakh electric vehicles have been registered in Telangana. Providing context to this figure, the Minister highlighted that five out of every 100 vehicles in the state are now EVs, reflecting a growing shift towards sustainable mobility.

The Minister along with Vikas Raj and Transport Commissioner Surendra Mohan, visited four states to study their electric vehicle policies. Using the insights gained, the Telangana government formulated a policy specifically tailored to the state’s needs and priorities. He also noted the importance of firms manufacturing electric vehicles taking the lead in setting up charging stations to ensure convenience for users and support the adoption.

By offering financial incentives, encouraging infrastructure development and tailoring initiatives, the Telangana government aims to make EVs more accessible and practical for residents.
