Japan has officially released a comprehensive list of job categories that make foreign nationals eligible to apply for a work visa, opening a formal pathway for skilled professionals across multiple industries to live and work in the country.

The Japanese government confirmed that any individual whose qualifications and work fall within one of the recognised occupational categories may proceed with a work visa application through the appropriate channels.

The full list of qualifying job categories is as follows: Professor, Artist, Religious Activities, Journalist, Business Manager, Legal/Accounting Services, Medical Services, Researcher, Instructor, Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, Intra-company Transferee, Nursing Care, Entertainer, Skilled Labour, Specified Skilled Worker, and Technical Intern Training.

The categories reflect a deliberate effort to attract talent across a wide spectrum of industries. Academic and creative roles sit alongside technical and care-based occupations, while professionals in medicine, law, accounting, and engineering are all included within the framework.

Who qualifies for a Japan work visa

Beyond white-collar and professional occupations, the eligibility criteria extend to skilled tradespeople, technical intern trainees, and those working in nursing care. Entertainers and religious workers are also formally recognised under the scheme.

Intra-company transferees, meaning employees relocated to Japan by their current employer from an overseas office, are equally covered under the framework, making the policy relevant not only to individual applicants but also to multinational organisations with operations in Japan.

The breadth of the list suggests Japan is casting a wide net in its effort to attract foreign talent, covering everything from research institutions and educational settings to care facilities and skilled trades.

Foreign nationals who believe their profession falls within one of the 16 categories are advised to consult the relevant Japanese immigration authorities to determine the specific documentation and eligibility requirements applicable to their individual circumstances.

UAE names foreigners eligible for residence permits

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that the UAE has listed nine categories of foreigners who are eligible to obtain a residence permit without a job.

This provision, known as the Non-Working Residence Permit, is grounded in Article 46 of the UAE's residence legislation.
