Former US president Bill Clinton has been rushed to hospital, his aide said in a statement.

The 78-year-old's deputy chief of staff Angel Ureña said on X, formally Twitter: "President Clinton was admitted to Georgetown University Medical Center this afternoon for testing and observation after developing a fever. He remains in good spirits and deeply appreciates the excellent care he is receiving."

An unnamed source told NBC News the former president's situation was "not urgent." They continued: "The former president will be fine. He developed a fever and wanted to be checked out. He is awake and alert."

As reported by the Mirror, the Democrat was previously hospitalised in 2021 after he developed an infection that reached his blood. He was released following six days of care.

Clinton had a quadruple bypass operation at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in 2004 and returned to the same hospital for another heart procedure.

He made an appearance on the campaign trail as part of Vice President Kamala Harris' failed bid for the presidency. Clinton recently released his latest book about his life following his time as president.

'Citizen: My Life After the White House' focuses on major events over the past two decades, including the Iraq War, January 6 riot at the Capitol and the pandemic. Clinton was president of the US from 1993 until 2001 when Republican George W. Bush ended an era of Democrat dominance in Washington DC.
