SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Firefighters have knocked down a vegetation fire that burned approximately 2.5 acres near Convoy Street and eastbound State Route 52, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
The fire, initially reported as a 1-acre vegetation fire in heavy fuels shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday, was moving at a slow rate of spread when crews arrived. The San Diego Police Department said large flames were reported in a canyon area, but the fire appeared to be away from nearby buildings.
San Diego Fire-Rescue deployed five engines, five brush rigs, two water tenders and SDFD Copter 3 to battle the flames. Four of the brush rigs were from SDFD, while one was provided by the Miramar Fire Department.
Firefighters made steady progress and ultimately knocked down the blaze after it grew to approximately 2.5 acres, according to SDFD. The eastbound SR-52 on-ramp from Convoy Street was closed during active firefighting operations.
Crews remained at the scene for about two more hours to complete mop-up operations and check for remaining hot spots. The cause of the fire has not yet been released.
