SINGAPORE: Singapore leaders expressed their condolences to former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad after his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, died on Monday (Sep 28).
Dr Hasmah, a doctor who advocated for maternal health, family planning, literacy, drug abuse prevention and mental health, was aged 100.
She had been married to Dr Mahathir since 1956 and they marked 70 years together in August.
In a condolence letter to Dr Mahathir on Monday, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said Dr Hasmah had led an "extraordinary life" and "touched the lives of generations of Malaysians".

He called Dr Hasmah a "pioneer in her field" who made important contributions to healthcare, education and social causes in Malaysia, adding that she will continue to inspire many to serve their communities and work for positive change.
"Singapore was where you and Tun Siti Hasmah first met, as medical students," said Mr Wong.
"Over the years, we were always happy to welcome her back to Singapore, including when both of you returned to your old college during your official visit in 2018. Those of us who had the privilege of meeting her will remember her visits with great fondness."
Mr Wong also recalled Dr Hasmah's "warmth, grace and zest for life", noting how she found joy in music, the arts, and writing, and pursued her interests with great enthusiasm
"She brought warmth and vitality to all that she did and will be fondly remembered by all who knew her," he said.
"I hope you will find strength and solace in the many wonderful memories you shared over a lifetime together."
Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a Facebook post that he was saddened by her death, adding that he had known Dr Hasmah for many years and always enjoyed meeting her.
“She was warm and gracious, full of life, and had a wonderful sense of humour,” he said.
Mr Lee also recalled Dr Hasmah’s love of music and the violin, noting that she continued performing well into her 90s, including to raise funds for charity.
“Her zest for life was remarkable,” he said.
Mr Lee added that, as a doctor, Dr Hasmah had devoted much of her life to improving the health and well-being of Malaysians, particularly women, children, and families.
“Ho Ching and I will remember Tun Siti Hasmah fondly. Our deepest condolences to Tun Mahathir and his family during this difficult time. May she rest in peace.”
Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan, a former ophthalmologist, said in a social media post that he has always had a special appreciation for Dr Hasmah's pioneering contributions to medicine and public health.
He noted how she began her career at a time when there were few women doctors in Malaysia and went on to champion the health and well-being of women, children and rural communities.
"Her life and career opened doors for many who came after her, and she showed how medicine, at its best, is not only about treating patients, but also improving lives and serving society," said Dr Balakrishnan.
"My deepest condolences to Tun Dr Mahathir and his family, and to all Malaysians mourning her loss," he added.
