The search for the missing hikers on Mount Dukono has been halted for the day due to safety reasons, said the head of Ternate Search and Rescue Agency.
Local police earlier said they were told by survivors that three people, including two Singaporeans, died in the eruption.
However, no official figures have been provided by the authorities as of Friday evening (May 8).
Mount Duokono erupted on Friday morning, sending ash into the sky as rescuers raced to reach those trapped.
Twenty hikers were on the slopes when disaster struck, local police told reporters. Fifteen of them were successfully evacuated.
