Liberia: Grebo Leader Calls for Calm and Swift Probe Into Death of Samuel Gekor in Grand Gedeh

MONROVIA – A prominent Liberian lawyer and leading figure in the Grebo community has called for calm and a swift investigation into the death of Samuel Gekor, a young Grebo man found dead on a cassava farm near Zwedru, the capital of southeastern Grand Gedeh County.

Gekor’s body was discovered in the Kanneh area of Electoral District Two after he had been missing for three days. The circumstances of his disappearance remain unclear.

Counsellor Kunkunyon Wleh Teh expressed deep sadness over Gekor’s death and extended condolences to his family and the wider Grebo community, one of Liberia’s major ethnic groups, concentrated largely in the country’s southeast.

Teh, a former student of Bishop Juwel High School in Zwedru, said he has spoken with Gekor’s family to offer his condolences and support.

While acknowledging the community’s grief, fear and frustration, and its legitimate demand for answers, Teh urged residents to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding as the search for justice continues.

He called on the Liberia National Police and the Ministry of Justice to speed up the investigation, establish the facts surrounding the disappearance and death, and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable under the law. The family and the public, he said, deserve timely updates, transparency and credible answers.

“Every Liberian deserves the right to life, safety, and dignity, irrespective of tribe, county, or social standing. No family should be left without answers when a loved one dies under troubling circumstances,” Teh said.

He said the community’s responsibility at this moment is to stand with the family, promote peace and demand justice through lawful means, cautioning against letting grief and anger turn into actions that could endanger lives or deepen divisions.

“Justice must be pursued, truth must prevail, and peace must be preserved,” he said.
