Liberia: Somapa Concludes Key Engagement On Liberia’s eBorder Initiative - FrontPageAfrica

Monrovia – Somapa, through its flagship Smart Border Solutions initiative backed by over 30 years of global experience in border management, has concluded a major intergovernmental engagement with multiple ministries and agencies in Liberia.

The engagement forms part of the Government of Liberia’s ambitious eBorder Solution, which aims to modernize national border management systems while advancing the country’s broader development agenda.

The initiative, tailored to Liberia’s operational realities and long-term priorities, follows an extensive consultative process involving a wide range of government institutions.

Activities conducted during the engagement included workshops, technical consultations, site visits, and operational assessments to ensure the proposed system reflects the practical challenges faced at border points.

Officials disclosed that the latest session marks the final phase of consultations, confirming that stakeholder inputs have been thoroughly incorporated into the proposed framework.

Developed in partnership with Somapa, the project emphasizes the co-design of customized systems rather than the deployment of off-the-shelf solutions.

Authorities stressed that the eBorder system will be “Liberian designed, Liberian used, and Liberian owned,” reinforcing national sovereignty and long-term sustainability.

Once implemented, the solution is expected to significantly enhance border security, improve identity management, and strengthen coordination among government agencies. It will also provide greater operational visibility across all entry points nationwide.

Beyond security improvements, the initiative is positioned as a catalyst for economic growth by facilitating legitimate trade and travel, protecting government revenue, and supporting national development objectives.

The presentation was spearheaded by Somapa IT Vice President for Global Government Engagement, Nigel Manns, who highlighted the importance of building systems aligned with Liberia’s unique operational context.

As part of the rollout strategy, the Foundation Program will begin at Roberts International Airport, where it will address immediate operational challenges while building the skills, systems, and institutional capacity required for full-scale implementation.

Authorities have described the eBorder initiative as a legacy project that will establish a modern, scalable, and nationally controlled border management system, guided by the vision: “Securing Borders, Promoting Prosperity.”

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Nelson Aloe Wolo, Deputy Commissioner General for Administration at the Liberia Immigration Service, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to upgrading Liberia’s border systems to meet international standards.

He noted that Liberia is at a critical stage in strengthening its border infrastructure and emphasized the need to align operations with global best practices.

The session featured interactive presentations between facilitators and participants and concluded successfully, marking a significant step toward the full implementation of the eBorder Solution.

Consultations, however, remain ongoing, with additional stakeholders, including the Liberia National Tourism Authority, expected to be engaged as the initiative progresses.
