Liberia: Opposition Leaders to Sign Joint Communiqué at Sunday Roundtable

MONROVIA – Leaders of five of Liberia’s opposition political parties are expected to sign a joint communiqué on Sunday, September 27, 2026, in what organizers describe as the next step toward formal cooperation among the country’s opposition.

The signing will cap a Second Roundtable of Opposition Political Leaders, set for 3 p.m. at the Sinkor Palace in Sinkor, Monrovia. Hon. Simeon C. M. Freeman, Political Leader of the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC), is hosting the meeting.

According to a press statement issued Saturday by the Opposition Political Parties Joint Technical Committee (OPPJTC), Sunday’s gathering will bring together former President George Manneh Weah, Sr., Political Leader of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC); Alexander Benedict Cummings, Political Leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC); Ambassador Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr., Political Leader and Standard Bearer of the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE); Freeman of the MPC; and Jonathan A. Mason, Political Leader of the Union of Liberian Democrats Party (ULDP).

The committee said the meeting aims to strengthen the “technical foundation” of the emerging cooperation, including the practical arrangements, structures and mechanisms needed to sustain it.

The communiqué, the statement said, will reflect understandings reached so far and serve as a basis for continued consultation and cooperation among the participating parties.

Earlier Engagements

Sunday’s roundtable follows two meetings held earlier this month. On Saturday, September 5, an Opposition Roundtable brought together key individual stakeholders in the opposition community. A day later, on Sunday, September 6, leaders of opposition political parties met in a separate roundtable.

Those meetings, the committee said, gave participants the opportunity to exchange views on the national situation, identify common interests and explore practical avenues for working together.

‘More Than an Electoral Alliance’

The OPPJTC said the opposition leaders remain committed to building unity not merely as a route to an electoral alliance, but as an opportunity to rethink how Liberia’s national problems are assessed and addressed.

The leaders, the statement added, intend to pursue collective ideas, constructive engagement and practical solutions “in the interest of the Liberian people.”

The signing of the communiqué is expected to take place live at the close of Sunday’s meeting.
