Violence Erupts In 2 Districts Of Assam, Internet Suspended

The Assam government has ordered the suspension of internet and mobile data services in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts after violence erupted amid a tense law and order situation. Authorities said the shutdown was imposed to maintain public peace and prevent further deterioration. The move followed clashes between opposing groups that left several people injured and prompted police to use force to disperse protesters. Despite prohibitory orders, demonstrations continued in parts of the affected areas, escalating tensions further.

Internet Shut Down After Violent Clashes

In an official order, the Home and Political Department of the Assam government said internet services were being temporarily suspended in the interest of maintaining peace and tranquillity. The suspension applies to all mobile service providers operating in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong and will remain in force until further orders.

The notification cited provisions under Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, read with the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017. Authorities said the decision was taken to curb the spread of misinformation and prevent the situation from worsening.

Security Beefed Up

At least eight people were injured as two groups of protesters clashed in the region. Police resorted to a lathi charge and fired tear-gas shells to disperse the crowds and restore order, officials said.

Despite prohibitory orders being in place, large numbers of people took to the streets to protest the violence. Among them were women and children whose shops were allegedly set on fire by a mob on Monday. Protesters accused authorities of failing to protect their livelihoods and demanded action against those responsible for the arson.

Eviction Demands Add To Tensions

At the same time, another group of agitators gathered in the Kheroni market area, demanding the eviction of alleged encroachers from the tribal belt. The parallel protests added to the already volatile situation, stretching security arrangements across multiple locations.

Officials said security forces have been deployed in sensitive areas and that the situation is being closely monitored. The administration reiterated that the internet suspension is a temporary measure aimed at restoring normalcy and preventing further unrest as efforts continue to bring the situation under control.
