Delhi witnessed rain on Sunday morning as dark clouds covered several parts of the national capital. The showers came as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast an increase in monsoon activity across several parts of the country.
The IMD said two weather systems are contributing to the renewed spell of rainfall. An atmospheric system is active over northeast Madhya Pradesh, while a low-pressure area is developing along the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast. The monsoon trough currently extends from Amritsar towards the Bay of Bengal, supporting the flow of moisture over northern, central and eastern India.
Rain Alert For Delhi-NCR
Delhi and the wider NCR are expected to witness scattered spells of rain on Sunday, with isolated heavy showers also possible. The weather department has forecast generally cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall during the day.
The showers could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and affect traffic movement in parts of the region. Commuters may face disruptions during periods of intense rainfall.
Heavy Rain Forecast In Several States
The latest weather system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to parts of central and eastern India. Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, east Uttar Pradesh and Odisha are likely to receive isolated spells of exceptionally heavy rain.
The northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, are also expected to experience intense rainfall.
In northwest India, heavy showers are likely at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and west Uttar Pradesh.
The western coast is also likely to remain wet, with fairly widespread moderate rainfall expected over Konkan, Goa, coastal Karnataka and Kerala.
Monsoon Deficit Adds To Significance Of Rain Spell
The fresh spell comes after a relatively weak monsoon period. Cumulative rainfall across the country from June 1 to mid-August has remained below the Long Period Average (LPA), with the deficit standing at around 12%.
The rainfall deficit has been particularly significant for agriculture, following a sharp shortfall in June. The late-August rains could therefore be important for kharif crops across several rain-dependent regions.
