Body Of 21-Year-Old IIT Delhi Student Found Hanging In Hostel Room, Suicide Suspected

New Delhi: A 21-year-old IIT Delhi student was found dead, allegedly having committed suicide by hanging in his hostel room, as reported by news agency PTI. The student, Kumar Yash, was pursuing an M.Sc in his second year and hailed from Deoghar, Jharkhand. No suicide note was discovered at the scene.

Police revealed that Kumar had been under psychiatric care and had visited the IIT Hospital the previous day. The incident occurred late Tuesday night when a distress call was made around 11 p.m. regarding a suicide at Aravali Hostel, room D57. Upon arrival, the room was locked from the inside. However, Kumar’s friend and IIT staff managed to break the window to gain entry.

Kumar was found hanging with two towels. Despite efforts by his friend and staff to cut him down, he was unresponsive. He was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital in an IIT ambulance, where doctors declared him brought dead. His body is now at the mortuary, and his family has been informed. 

Police, along with a mobile crime team, inspected the hostel room. Although no note was found, Kumar’s medical records confirm that he was under psychiatric treatment and had an upcoming appointment with a psychiatrist on October 29. Statements from his friends have been taken, and there is currently no suspicion of foul play. Further investigations are ongoing.

A 19-year-old college student, Riddhi Surekha, allegedly died by suicide in Malad West on Tuesday after reportedly jumping from the 23rd floor of her residential building in Mandlik Nagar, SV Road. The incident occurred around 1:15 pm when Riddhi, a Bachelor of Business Administration student at Potdar College, returned from college and went straight to the terrace before allegedly jumping. Her bag was found on the 23rd floor.

The motive behind the suicide remains unclear, and police have registered an accidental death report. After the post-mortem, her body was handed over to her family. Her father works in the stock market.
