Mumbai police crime branch has initiated extradition proceedings to bring Anmol Bishnoi, brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, back from the United States in connection with the firing incident outside actor Salman Khan's Mumbai residence.
A non-bailable warrant has already been issued for Anmol's arrest by the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court, reported Hindustan Times. A Red-Corner Notice has also been issued against him to keep track of his locations abroad.
Through a Red Corner Notice, a member state of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) makes a request to locate and arrest a wanted criminal.
To formalise the extradition process, the police require certified copies of court documents in addition to the warrant, said a senior police official. The extradition request was approved by the MCOCA court on October 16, and the police expect to receive the documents shortly, the report added.
Once the documents are received, a formal proposal will be submitted to the central government for further action.
On April 14, two bike-borne men opened fire outside the actor's residence in the suburban Bandra area of Mumbai. Anmol Bishnoi, his brother Lawrence Bishnoi, and gang associate Rohit Godara have been named as wanted suspects in the case.
Earlier, Anmol Bishnoi was thought to be residing in Canada and travelling to the US. However, an IP address linked to a Facebook post, through which Bishnoi claimed responsibility for the incident, was traced to Portugal.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai police have requested the Centre to take custody of Lawrence Bishnoi who is currently being held in Sabarmati Jail, Gujarat, as they intensify efforts to resolve the case.
Mumbai police have claimed to secure critical evidence linking Anmol to the April incident. As per the officials, shooter Vicky Gupta was in contact with Anmol regarding the attack. Vicky recorded their conversations and forwarded them to his brother, Sonu Gupta, who has since become a pivotal witness.
