SINGAPORE: Debate is underway in parliament on changes to Singapore's political salary framework, including a one-off salary increase of up to 9 per cent for political office holders.
MPs will also see their monthly allowances rise from S$13,750 to S$18,500.
The debate on Thursday (Sep 10) comes two days after Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Coordinating Minister for Public Services Chan Chun Sing set out the government's response to an independent review of the framework. The changes also cover salary benchmarks and ministerial grades.
Workers' Party chief Pritam Singh said his party supports the increase in MP allowances, in view of inflation, and agrees with the decision not to raise ministers' salaries by more than 9 per cent.
However, the WP disagrees with the formula used to benchmark ministerial salaries.
Mr Singh also asked the government to explain the job scope of mayors, and to include them in an upcoming study on how payments for community-related political roles should be determined.
