Four Earthquakes Shake China, Tibet and Nepal Within Hours

NEW DELHI, Jul 31: Four earthquakes struck parts of China, Tibet and Nepal within a span of a few hours late Thursday night and early Friday, with the strongest tremor measuring magnitude 4.5 in China, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The latest and strongest earthquake, measuring 4.5, occurred in China at 1:44 a.m. IST on Friday at a depth of 10 km, the NCS said.

Earlier, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck Tibet at 12:50 a.m. IST at a depth of 90 km, followed by a magnitude 3.4 tremor in Nepal at 1:18 a.m. at a depth of 15 km.

The NCS had also recorded a magnitude 4.3 earthquake in Tibet at 11:25 p.m. IST on Thursday. The tremor occurred at a depth of 130 km.

The four earthquakes were recorded between 11:25 p.m. Thursday and 1:44 a.m. Friday across the Himalayan region and western China, with their depths ranging from 10 km to 130 km.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage following the tremors. Authorities in China, Tibet and Nepal had also not issued any emergency advisories or tsunami warnings related to the seismic activity as of Friday morning.

The Himalayan belt is among the world’s most seismically active regions due to the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which frequently triggers earthquakes of varying intensity. (Agencies)
