Kudos to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on being conferred Norway’s prestigious Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, one of the highest civilian honors awarded by the Kingdom of Norway. The honour recognizes his decisive role in deepening India–Norway ties and his global leadership on issues that matter to humanity. Accepting the award, Prime Minister Modi dedicated it to the historic friendship between the people of India and Norway, calling it a true reflection of the affection, goodwill, and mutual respect that bind both nations. This recognition is more than a ceremonial award. It is a powerful symbol of India’s rising stature on the world stage, of leadership that is both strong and humane, and of diplomacy that puts people first. It further cements the unbreakable friendship, trust, and shared resolve for global progress that India and Norway have built over decades.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India today plays a defining role in advancing world peace, sustainable development, climate action, and the welfare of humanity. For every Indian, this moment brings immense pride, inspiration, and renewed self-confidence in the path the nation is on. With this honour, Prime Minister Modi adds a 32nd international award to his name, underscoring how consistently the world has acknowledged India’s voice and values. The India–Norway partnership has grown into a model of modern cooperation. In the blue economy, Norway supports India’s Deep Ocean Mission and Arctic engagements, while both nations collaborate on sustainable fisheries, marine research, and green shipping corridors that reduce emissions. On clean energy, the partnership is visible in green hydrogen, offshore wind, and carbon capture, with Norway’s sovereign wealth fund emerging as one of the largest investors in India’s renewable energy sector. Trade ties received a historic boost through the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement signed in 2024, which includes Norway and commits $100 billion in investment into India over 15 years, creating jobs and technology transfer across critical sectors. The Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, instituted in 1985 by King Olav V, is conferred on foreign and Norwegian nationals for outstanding service in the interest of Norway.
The Grand Cross is its highest class, reserved for heads of state and government who have made exceptional contributions to bilateral relations and global good. Prime Minister Modi’s global recognitions now span continents, from the Legion of Honour in France and the Order of St. Andrew in Russia to the Order of Zayed in the UAE, the Order of the Nile in Egypt, and honours from the United States, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and beyond. Each award reflects a common theme: the world sees India as a force for stability, growth, and compassion. India and Norway also share core values that make this partnership natural. Both are democracies committed to a rules-based international order, multilateralism, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. They co-lead the Leadership Group for Industry Transition to decarbonize heavy industries, and cooperate closely on climate action, Arctic research, education, and innovation. Strong people-to-people ties, academic exchanges, and a vibrant Indian diaspora in Norway add warmth to the strategic relationship. In an era of uncertainty, this honour signals that consistent, principled diplomacy works. It shows that when a nation leads with purpose, respects every partner, and keeps citizens at the center of policy, the world responds with trust. From the fjords of Norway to the villages of India, this award celebrates a shared future built on dignity, sustainability, and peace. It tells 1.4 billion Indians that their country’s voice matters, that their progress is recognized, and that India’s journey is lifting others along the way. This is not just a medal for one leader. It is a milestone for a nation that chooses service over self, cooperation over conflict, and humanity over all else. For India, it validates a foreign policy that puts national interest and human welfare at the center. As both nations face the challenges of a changing world, this honour sets the tone for the next phase of India–Norway relations: deeper investment, stronger innovation, and a shared commitment to global good. Ultimately, the award belongs to every Indian whose hard work, values, and aspirations are now recognized on the world stage. It is proof that when India rises, it rises for the world.
