Public Support Vital For Population Policy, UCC: RSS Chief Bhagwat

MYSURU, May 7: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday said population control policies and implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) could succeed only with public cooperation and awareness.

Addressing an interaction session after delivering a lecture on “Social Harmony as a Catalyst for National Development” at JSS Mahavidyapeetha in Karnataka, Bhagwat also said caste-based politics would end only when society stopped identifying itself through caste divisions.

“Because society remembers caste, politicians take advantage of it. Their legitimate aim is to get votes. If they cannot get votes through work, they will get votes through caste,” he said.

Responding to a question on the Population Control Bill and UCC, Bhagwat said the RSS was a social organisation and not the government, stressing that laws alone could not ensure success without people’s participation.

“People must first be educated. Policy is necessary, but policy can only succeed with public cooperation,” he said.

Bhagwat also called for harmony among religions and communities and urged people to practise equality through conduct rather than slogans.

Referring to population control measures during the Emergency period, he said forceful implementation had created public resentment and political backlash.
