J&K: Three Over-Ground Workers of Terrorists held in Anantnag
by Northlines · NorthlinesSrinagar, July 8: Three alleged over-ground workers (OGWs) of terrorists were apprehended in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district after the Facial Recognition System (FRS) deployed for the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra generated alerts about their movement, police said on Wednesday.
According to a police spokesperson, the FRS installed by Anantnag Police detected three suspicious individuals while they were passing through the Sarbal area, triggering immediate alerts and demonstrating the effectiveness of the advanced surveillance system deployed for the annual pilgrimage.
Acting on the alerts, police personnel intercepted the suspects and carried out identity verification. During the verification process, all three individuals were identified as alleged over-ground workers (OGWs) linked to terrorists, the spokesperson said.
Based on intelligence generated through the Facial Recognition System and the subsequent verification, the trio was taken into custody by Anantnag Police for further legal proceedings.
Police said the successful detection underscores the growing role of technology-driven policing in strengthening the security grid during the Amarnath Yatra. The spokesperson added that the use of advanced surveillance systems is helping security agencies ensure a safe, secure and incident-free pilgrimage by enabling the timely identification of suspicious individuals.
The investigation is underway, police said.
