Lok Sabha Extends ‘One Nation, One Election’ Panel’s Tenure Till Winter Session

NEW DELHI, Jul 29: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday approved an extension of the tenure of the Joint Committee of Parliament examining the proposed One Nation, One Election legislation, allowing it to submit its report by the first day of the last week of the upcoming Winter Session.

The extension was granted after committee chairman P.P. Chaudhary moved a resolution seeking more time for the 41-member panel to complete its examination of the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024. The House passed the resolution by a voice vote.

The parliamentary panel is tasked with scrutinising the proposed constitutional amendment aimed at enabling simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies as part of the Centre’s One Nation, One Election initiative.

The committee has been conducting consultations across the country on the proposed framework, which also envisages synchronising elections to local bodies in phases by 2029.

The Winter Session of Parliament is generally convened in the last week of November and concludes before Christmas.

The extension will provide the committee additional time to complete consultations with stakeholders and finalise its recommendations on the proposed electoral reforms before presenting its report to Parliament. (Agencies)
