Reasi, March 17: Jammu and Kashmir Police has finally tightened noose against rampant illegal sand mining by intercepting and seizing vehicles during a naka at Bambla Chowk, here.

According to reports the police intercepted a tractor bearing registration number JK11 C9280 for allegedly transporting illegal sand. The tractor was also reportedly seized by the concerned authorities.

“The vehicle was caught extracting and transporting local sand without any valid mining license or permission,” said eye witnesses, adding that the seizure was carried out by the local Chowkie Officer from Bambla, under the supervision of Station Head Officer from Pouni.

They said that the tractor belongs to a local leader.

“If leaders do illegal mining, what will the others do? A mobile number was reportedly displayed in connection with the vehicle or owner,” said local sources, adding that the action of the district police is worth appreciation.

“The prompt action of the district police for repeated actions against illegal mining, including multiple vehicle seizures in recent days is worth appreciation,” said locals, adding that however, the role of local mining officer is dubious.

Locals accused the local mining officers of being indifferent towards repeated complaints, including one made to the ADC Sunderbani about mining near a bridge in Nala Panchayat’s Barnada area.

Meanwhile locals have demanded the DMO to register FIRs against owners and drivers involved, and to enforce stricter measures to curb the practice.
