Sonam Wangchuk Ends 26-Day Hunger Strike After Centre Assures Action on Paper Leaks

New Delhi, July 24: Activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day indefinite hunger strike shortly after midnight on Friday at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, following a meeting with Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh. Wangchuk broke his fast in the presence of the two ministers and his wife, Gitanjali, marking a significant development in the ongoing agitation over the alleged NEET paper leak. 

Wangchuk had been on an indefinite fast since June 28 after joining the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)-led protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. He launched the hunger strike in solidarity with students demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and comprehensive reforms to India’s examination system. His participation brought nationwide attention to the student-led movement. 

On July 18, Delhi Police shifted Wangchuk from the protest site to Safdarjung Hospital due to his deteriorating health. He was later transferred to Medanta Hospital, where he continued the fast until late Thursday night. 

The breakthrough came hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a video message announcing that the Union Cabinet would discuss tougher measures against examination paper leaks. He said the government would introduce a Bill in Parliament next week proposing fast-track courts and stricter punishment for those involved in paper leak cases.

“Tomorrow, there will be a discussion in the Cabinet. After incorporating the suggestions of Cabinet members, it will be given its final form. From Monday, when the second week of Parliament begins, we will try to get that Bill passed as soon as possible,” the Prime Minister said.
