SRINAGAR, Sept 17: The upper reaches of Gulmarg and Gurez received the season’s first snowfall on Thursday, while overnight rain lashed the plains of Kashmir, including Srinagar, officials said.

The upper reaches of the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, including Gondola Phase 2 and the Apharwat area, recorded snowfall during the night.

A thin layer of snow covered the higher reaches, enhancing the scenic landscape of the popular tourist destination, officials said.

The frontier Gurez sector in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district also witnessed snowfall in Tulail Valley and Kabuli Gali.

Light snowfall was reported from a few other higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir as well.

Meanwhile, the plains of the Valley experienced overnight rainfall, with Srinagar and surrounding areas receiving rain.

The Meteorological Department has forecast fairly widespread light rain or thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

The weather is expected to remain mainly dry over the next few days from Friday, according to the department.

The early snowfall in the higher reaches comes ahead of the winter season and has added a fresh white layer to the upper slopes of Gulmarg and Gurez. (Agencies)
