PM Modi Hoists National Flag at Red Fort on 80th Independence Day

New Delhi, Aug 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hoisted the National Flag at the historic Red Fort as the nation celebrated its 80th Independence Day, with this year’s celebrations highlighting the contribution of young India towards building a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

For the first time since Independence, the national song Vande Mataram was rendered at the Red Fort as the Prime Minister arrived for the celebrations. He thereafter hoisted the National Flag, followed by the singing of the national anthem.

The flag hoisting was synchronised with a 21-gun salute, while flower petals were showered from two Mi-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force, adding to the ceremonial proceedings at the iconic venue.

Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Modi said that Vande Mataram was echoing from the historic fort for the first time since Independence. He also expressed solidarity with people affected by severe floods and landslides witnessed in several parts of the country in recent days.

The Prime Minister assured affected families that the entire nation stood firmly with them during the difficult period.

Emphasising the importance of national resolve and capabilities, Modi said a nation becomes great when it moves forward on the strength of its determination and abilities.

The Independence Day celebrations this year also focus on Yuva Shakti, recognising the role of India’s youth in driving the country towards the goal of a developed India by 2047. (Agencies)
