J&K: 4.6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Doda Early Morning

JAMMU, Apr 12: An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 struck Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir early Sunday morning, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.

The tremor occurred at 4:32 am at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located at latitude 33.090 N and longitude 75.928 E.

According to the NCS, the quake was recorded in Doda and was of shallow origin. In a post on X, the agency shared details of the seismic activity, including its magnitude, location and depth.

Earthquakes can occur at depths ranging from the Earth’s surface to about 700 kilometres. Based on depth, they are classified into three categories — shallow (0–70 km), intermediate (70–300 km) and deep (300–700 km), as per data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
